Springtime on Ærø brings with it a very particular lively atmosphere: Flags are hoisted right to the masthead, outdoor life returns at full force and, in the harbours, work commences on making yachts and smaller boats ready for their return to the water.
Those lucky enough to own a veteran car, throw the cover off it, give it a good polish and bring it out on the road to enjoy the island with a drive in the open air, wind blowing through the hair. The sight of spring lamb on luscious fields of green grass, along with blooming beautiful bulbous flowers, like crocus and daffodil, appear all over the island.
Nature’s show of colour galore is spectacular to watch, and plentiful wild birds celebrate it with lovely song from dawn till dusk.
The island’s gardens are buzzing with life: Ærø is officially the sunshine state of Denmark, with more sunshine than anywhere else and averaging at one degree Cᶛ warmer than the rest of the country. You reap as you sow: on Ærø there’s always plenty to go round!
